The lower cost and convenience of VoIP are the main reasons businesses give for adoption.

VoIP lets you make telephone calls over the Internet using your broadband connection, avoiding public-switched telephone charges. Using an easy to use online control panel, via a web browser, you can operate your own local phone exchange (PBX) to manage extension numbers and call groups.

There are three main elements to a VoIP service:

1. A VoIP-enabled telephone - This can be an all-in-one handset, or a normal handset plugged into an adaptor, or a softphone: a computer program that uses a microphone and headphones attached to your computer to emulate a real handset.

2. An Internet connection - A leased line or ADSL/cable broadband is ideal; a dial-up or satellite internet connection will most likely cause a reduction in sound quality.

3. A virtual PBX account - with a VoIP service provider. This gives you a VoIP external number: which is what other people dial to call you.
